Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has agreed a new one-year contract extension with the option of an additional year, according to The Athletic.
The 53-year-old’s current deal is due to expire at the end of this season.
The reported new deal would take the Spaniard to over a decade in charge of the club, having joined City in the summer of 2016.
It is claimed an official announcement confirming the new contract is expected in the coming days.
Man City are not commenting on the reports of Guardiola agreeing a new deal.
The Athletic journalist Sam Lee, who broke the story, told Sky Sports News: “What I understand is Guardiola’s agreed the contract and the announcement is due on Thursday. It’s a one-year plus the option for another one.
“Now it flips the narrative a bit. On the pitch they’ve got to sort out some problems with injuries, form and the results. But we can start to look ahead now to January, the summer and beyond at the prospect of Guardiola overseeing another rebuild.
“The director of football Txiki Begiristain is leaving so if the manager had left as well there would have been quite a big period of uncertainty there, but with Guardiola set to stay it steadies the ship a bit.
“Fans can get excited about what comes next and transfer windows, results and everything else that comes with Guardiola.”
The news of Guardiola’s reported new contract comes with Sporting’s Hugo Viana replacing City director of football Begiristain this summer.
Viana’s arrival led to rumours ex-Sporting boss Ruben Amorim could replace Guardiola, but the Portuguese has succeeded Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.
Asked whether Amorim’s Man Utd move was a factor in Guardiola’s potential new deal, Lee said: “No, I think the priority at City is always going to be for Pep Guardiola to stay, always.
“There may have been plans for Amorim or whoever else to take charge just in case but as long as Guardiola had said that he was going to stay they would have gone with that.
“You can’t imagine Amorim has gone to United so they’ve made a bigger case to Pep or Pep’s gone, ‘I better say now’. It was always going to be Pep’s decision and seemingly he has decided that he wants to stay, he’s got the hunger to stay and that’s all that matters really.”
